Include Your Dog in Family Portraits | Dizard Family Sneak Peek
Ellen wanted to have some family photos before her oldest son headed off to college. She also wanted their beloved dogs to be in the photos - if possible. I always say it’s possible. In fact, we did get both dogs… in one form or another.
The level of success truly depends on the amount of patience and time we are committing to the project. In fact, how I work with dogs is very similar to how I would photograph (human) toddlers. Snacks, games and silly noises. Lots of potty breaks, laps around the yard and cuddles, too.
I think we did pretty well! This Sneak Peek is a sweet candid moment with Catfish the Dog and mom… with the boys looking on. Enjoy!
Are you thinking of including your pets in your family portraits? You should! They ARE part of your family, after all. Here are some tips and tricks that will make the time we spend coaxing the pups a wee (lol) bit easier.
3 SIMPLE TIPS FOR PHOTOS WITH PETS
I DON’T USE NAMES. This is actually on purpose. If I say the dog’s name, oftentimes they are trained to “come”. I don’t want them to come to me (I mean, I do, but not until we are done with the photos!) So if I don’t ask what their names are or call their names, that’s why.
FUNNY NOISES MAKE GREAT FACES. When I work with families with dogs, you will commonly hear me making some pretty crazy noises. And all different kinds of sounds, too! No, I don’t charge extra for the show (though maybe I should?…) but it does help keep the dogs interested. All I want, really, is that adorable little head tilt, that sweet ear twitch. I will pretty much do whatever it takes to achieve that. Just promise you won’t think I’ve lost my mind… it really is all intentional. I swear!
TREATS FOR THE WIN. I usually try to keep some training treats on hand. If you know there is a special treat that your dog responds well to, by all means, bring it! We will get the best looks, behavior and tail wags with a steady flow of positive reinforcement.
Of course, making sure your pet is fed, watered, walked should go without saying. (I just said it anyway.) Don’t forget that last minute fur brushing, his most adorable collar - and be ready to wrangle! It will all be worth it when you see the final results of your truly complete family portraits.
