HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
I'm a journalist by trade (UW-Madison School of Journalism), but I didn't last long. I bounced around a bit before going out on my own in 1994. I'm a writer, but also do creative concepting and produce and direct corporate videos. On the side, I'm an author, and published my first book, A Year In Words, in July 2019.
WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE think THEY KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
Sometimes, it's difficult for people to grasp the creative process, and to understand all the things that go into a project like a corporate video. But there are a lot of steps, and it really takes a good crew who understands not only the process but the client.
NAME ONE THING THAT YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
Well, I guess if they knew about my job, they wouldn't need me, right? Seriously, I think a lot of corporate clients want me to know their business and their industry. But in reality, they need me to learn just enough about their company to get the job done, but more importantly, they need to know I know MY business.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I like all the crews, clients and people I get to work with, and some of the places we get to go. And I love learning about new things all the time.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Find someone that will take you under their wing, be curious, and work hard.
WHAT IS THE ONE BOOK THAT YOU THINK I SHOULD READ RIGHT NOW?
Mine! But if you don't (or you already have), I just finished a book called Finish by Jon Acuff. It's great.
