HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
I've always been interested in the psychological aspects of a business - diving into how people think about and perceive various companies and products - and then using those analytics to craft brands and messages that best connect with the target audience. That led me to school at UW-Madison and undergraduate and graduate degrees in Public Relations and Mass Communications. From there, I found a professional home with Chad Ritterbusch and TRG Marketing.
WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE think THEY KNOW ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Many folks think that marketing and sales are the same thing. And while they are certainly intertwined, the truth is that marketing is more about taking the product to the audience, while sales are more about taking the audience to the product. There is nuance in there that can easily be misunderstood.
NAME ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOUR JOB.
I wish folks better understood how much "managing" goes into the job. It's not just about the final product - it's about everything that goes into getting us there. It's about backend research, communicating effectively, navigating schedules, building consensus, working hand-in-hand with creatives, time management, building and maintaining relationships, dealing with the unexpected, and putting people in the best situations to succeed.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love the variety of projects I work on and the clients I work for.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Embrace variety. To work in a firm or agency means no two days will be the same.
